Batman Visits Students—and Teaches Valuable Lessons
By Jacqueline Waters-Scofield
Yes, this is Baltimore, Maryland—not Gotham City! But Batman paid a visit to students at Margaret Brent Elementary/Middle School last month.
He must have seen the bat signal we sent up because he responded quickly to provide a message to all of our students about the importance of getting an education and developing self-respect and self-esteem. He also discussed how and why rules contribute to a healthy school culture—and why bullying isn’t nice. Unfortunately Robin couldn’t make it that day because, as Batman told students, he’s off at college studying hard and earning a great education.
Batman’s Batmobile was awesome—we were all so excited to see it! Pulling up to the school in it, Batman started his announcements with a bull horn alerting students that he had an important message to deliver. The students marveled over his full gear (hood, cape, boots, tights and body armor!)—and could barely contain their excitement. But they did a great job of listening and receiving the messages that Batman had to share. And he did a wonderful job of interacting and engaging with all of the students, and even modified his messages so they were appropriate and relevant for each grade level.
I have to let you know that it wasn’t just the younger students who were excited but the older ones, too, especially when Batman took the students outside so that they could see his authentic and decked-out Bat mobile – a custom-made black Ferrari. Everyone knows Batman has dozens of Batmobiles, but this one, I think, is the best.
Even though Batman has a very busy schedule protecting all citizens from harm, he took time out so that students and staff could take pictures with him and the Batmobile. I, too, got to take a picture with him. How cool is that? In addition to the photo opportunities, Batman also gave out souvenirs and autographs to all students who wanted one. He made such an impact that even some of the adult residents in the community came out to see him—and their pictures taken in front of the Batmobile. What a day this was!
From the administrators, faculty, staff and especially the students at Margaret Brent Elementary/Middle School, “Holy academics, Batman”—and thank you!
